TESSELLATUM - AMBIENT MUSIC FOR SHORT ATTENTION SPANS
“I set down a beautiful chord on paper and suddenly it rusts” - Alfred Schnittke
Motion is something inherent to music; it is essential to our survival as animals, and from the polyphony of Thomas Tallis up to Schnittke, Steve Reich, and Donnacha Dennehy, movement, repetition, and refraction have been an artistic obsessions of ours for hundreds of years.
In a hypnotic 40-minute meditation on the sound of viola and viols, award winning ‘demon fiddler’ (artsDesk) Dominic Stokes combines the ‘arrestingly beautiful’ music of Grammy award-winning Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy with a ground-breaking commissioned visual response by filmmaker Maria Andrews, creating an otherworldly, immersive atmosphere; elliding musical and visual lines that track a journey through London; an homage to my home, one shape from a thousand different angles.

Rothko Collective has fast become one of London’s most innovative and exciting young contemporary music ensembles.
Through infusing and incorporating our influences of theatre, cinema and dance, we create bold, exciting, immersive, and unapologetically unique musical experiences for our audiences, as part of our aim of ‘un-boring’ the concert hall, welcoming in new faces to the highest calibre music of today.
Alongside our portfolio of highly moving and successful live performances, we have
commissioned over 25 new works from the UK’s top emerging composers, and released
3 albums, including collaborations with State51, Apartment House, and the record label
another timbre.
We were featured on BBC Radio 3 as part of Caroline Shaw’s ‘composer of the week, have performed at Cafe OTO, and have been lucky enough to take part in some of Europe’s top festivals - including the Biennale musica Venezia (IT).
A freeform ensemble consisting of strings, percussion, wind, and the occasional signer or 3, our group is composed of London’s top emerging artists in the field of new music, having worked independently with Riot Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, Explore Ensemble, EXAUDI, 12 Ensemble, Chineke!, and the Britten Sinfonia.
