Dominic Stokes is a violist, composer, and creative director of the Rothko Collective

 
 

Dominic Stokes is a violist, composer, actor, and director who has established himself as one of London’s leading young contemporary artists.

His passion and musical facility for all things contemporary has led him to work with groups at the forefront of the new-music scene, such as the Riot Ensemble, “The supergroup of top soloists playing new music”, Manchester Camerata, 12 Ensemble, and Explore Ensemble, with multiple appearances as a soloist and in ensemble on and SWRKultur (DE), npoklassiek (NL), SRF 2 Kultur (CH), and BBC radios 3 and 4.

Having started his musical life as Head Chorister at Westminster Abbey, making music in collaboration with others runs in his blood. As an ensemble musician Dominic has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many of our lifetime’s most prolific performers, including Irvine Arditti , Timothy Ridout, Jacob Collier, Jack Sheen, and Sir George Benjamin.

His skill in solo performance and chamber music has led him to tour parts of Europe, Asia and North America, and facilitated him to partake in many of Europe’s top festivals, such as the Dartington, Aldburgh and Lake District music festivals (UK), alongside the Biennale musica di Venezia (IT), WEIT WEINGARTEN! (DE),  Spor festival (DK), as well as the Lucerne festival and Montreux jazz festival (CH), where his own original music and arrangements have been performed.

Dominic has had the privilege of collaborating with many of today’s outstanding composers, including Naomi Pinnock, Bara Gilasdottir, Dobrinka Tabakova, Sally Beamish, Anna Thorvalsdottir, Hilda Paredes, and Ben Nobuto, premiering chamber and solo works in some of Europe’s most prestigious venues, such as the Wigmore Hall, King’s place, BOLD TENDENCIES,  the Barbican centre, and DeDoelen Rotterdam.

Dominic is the founder and director of Rothko collective, an award-winning new music group dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the concert format. With his group, he has commissioned over 25 new works, given multiple highly acclaimed performances across Europe, including in Cafe OTO, as part of the Arran international festival, and as part of the Venice Biennale. They have recorded and released music in collaboration with NonClassical, STATE51, Apartment House, and the label Another Timbre.

Dominic is dedicated to opening up classical music to a wider audience, to make it more accessible, and change the way it is perceived in society.
